At Techalogic we’re always looking for ways to engage with the community, get our name out there and make a difference to people’s safety on the roads. To our surprise, we were contacted by Glasgow City council for a really fantastic cause.
Techalogic Help Shawlands Bike Bus
Glasgow City Council wrote to us about a team of parents from a local primary school who had set up a bike bus, they’re called the Shawlands Bike Bus.
The Shawlands gang have been cycling together every Friday and the parents and their children ride their bikes as part of the bike bus as a means of getting to school. The bike bus starts its journey from the junction of Thorncliffe Gardens with Titwood road at 8:30 every Friday morning. You can find their usual route here.
The idea was inspired by a similar story in Barcelona. Some parents cycled on the roads with their children and the Shawlands lot saw it and thought what a brilliant idea, and we couldn’t agree more! It’s so nice to see such a communal way of getting to school, and we’re sure the kids love it.
Although it looks a lot of fun, some cars on the route were getting impatient with the kids. To combat this and to ensure better safety on the roads, we’ve sorted the bike bus out with three Techalogic cycling helmet cameras and a load of safety equipment like LED chest vests to keep them visible on their journeys.
We’ve mentioned before, but some of the most vulnerable road users are cyclists, which is what makes having correct and working safety equipment so important. We fitted the parents with three cycling cameras and some safety equipment to keep them visible on the roads, but we’d like to stress how important it is for other road users to respect cyclists and obey the Highway Code when passing them – especially our new friends on the Bike Bus!
We’re really pleased that these parents committed to cycling to school with their kids once a week. It’s great exercise, reduces pollution, and honestly looks like a lot of fun! We’ve attached a video that the Shawlands Bike Bus team sent over; you can view it here.
